ABSTRACT

These course materials evolve as the author's efforts to present, at least, some scanty ideas on the state of Bulgarian medicine in historical aspect. The work is cumbersome for several reasons:

1. Most of the sources are in Bulgarian language

2. English language sources, if any, are fragmentary and difficult to obtain

3. While every effort is made to consult library materials, these, are absolutely inadequate and the author has pursued other means to collect information with private assets

4. Thus, a private archive has accumulated which offers more than what is presented in the following narrative

The author /or editor/ has divided the material in three time sequences, from which, only the second part is written. Here is the agenda:

Part One - Ancient and medieval evidences for medicine on the Bulgarian land /covering a period from 100 000 B.C. to 1878/

Part Two - Medical history of the modern Bulgarian state /from 1878 to 1989/

Part Three - Medicine in transition and in a state of globalization /after 1989/

The project is going on. Maybe, it could find its way in a book form. Whatever, the author hopes that the work is enjoyable and will find good audience among the health community.
